Alaska State Employees Association Juneau Chapter Awards Scholarship for the 2011/2012 Academic Year
The Juneau Chapter of ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 has awarded three scholarships for the 2011/2012 academic year. Applications were received in only one of the three categories (child of a member enrolled in a four-year degree program, member enrolled in a four-year degree program, and child of a member enrolled in a trade/vocational institution) in which they were offered, so all three category scholarships were awarded to applicants for the child of a member category.
Samantha Alex is beginning her first year at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and she has been accepted into the Aviation Technology Program there. In high school in Juneau, she played in pep band, the regional honor band, and the jazz band, performed in Jekyll & Hyde, was captain of the tennis team, and worked with the student council, including speaking at the state conference. She volunteered at the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, the Glory Hole, Make a Wish Foundation and Adopt a Highway through the Rainbow Girls. She has also worked in local businesses.

McLean Cannon plans to major in journalism. In high school, he volunteered with younger students, the Glory Hole and Interact Club. He performed in the Music Man, competed in forensics, played tennis, ran cross-country, and played baseball. He has been writing sports articles and a weekly athlete profile for the Juneau Empire and produced local stories as a news intern at KTOO FM. He also had summer jobs at local businesses.

Andrew Gregovich has completed one year at Colorado College majoring in geology. He also plans to complete a double minor in math and environmental issues, and possibly physics. While at Juneau Douglas High School, he led his National Ocean Sciences Bowl team as captain to a state title and to the national competition. He volunteered with SAGA, the United States Forest Service, and Trail Mix. He worked summers commercial fishing.

The Juneau Chapter congratulates all three of the scholarship recipients and hopes that their education will help advance their career goals.
